A day in the life of our Technical Project Manager, Tom Marley
“As the Technical Project Manager, I need to have a helicopter view of everything that is happening for our technical offerings. Activ Digital Marketing has gained a lot of clients through their excellent service and at any one time we have a number of website builds, updates, and amends taking place.
It is important that I am able to remain organised, and deploy our resource of developers to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently, on time, to budget, and to the high standards that we have set for ourselves.
When I start my day, I like to see what I have going on and organise my day. I will check my calendar to see what meetings I have on that day or coming up, and what I need to prepare for those. I also look at our project planning software to see what we are currently working on, what the status is, and what we having coming up. From here I can make, and adjust, our plans and ensure that everything is running smoothly. I also like to check on my emails first thing in the morning to see if any pressing issues have arisen and answer any questions so that I can focus the rest of my day on the various tasks at hand.
The aspect I love with my day is that it is so varied and I get to speak with lots of people. Meeting and speaking with clients, I can discuss and learn about their business, learn and advise their vision for their online presence and how they can automate tasks through their website relieving their admin burden.
Likewise with our Activ Digital Marketing franchisees, I can help support their ideas and come up with ways that they can meet their vision. I see it almost as a puzzle how we can gain the functionality to make the clients life easier whilst keeping great design and great UX for the end user.
And finally I can coordinate with our internal team, ensuring that we are working as effectively as we can, discussing ideas, and working inter-departmentally looking at the whole picture and wide offering of services provided by activ.
Whilst I like to organise my day, it is important that I remain flexible. At any point, I may receive an urgent request, support for a website build, or a vast array of questions that can arise in the world of websites that is so wide-ranging. These can, at times, hold up any given project so I like to respond quickly so that no time is wasted. However, the great thing with working on so many projects simultaneously, is that there is always something to move on to.
I am always keeping one eye on the future looking 1, 2, or 5 years down the line. One thing that I really enjoy is reading on all the latest developments in the world of WordPress design and development ensuring that we will remain on trend with great looking, fast, and secure websites as well as analysing what is the most cost efficient for our clients without sacrificing on quality or service. Additionally, I enjoy looking at other websites, seeing what they have done with their design, and trying to work out how they have created certain aspects , that I can bring into my own work.”
